Dr. Jean Chamberlain

Dr. Jean Chamberlain is an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster, and 2014 recipient of the Order of Canada. Since completing her training in Obstetrics and joining the faculty at McMaster, she has worked as an obstetrician in Yemen, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Pakistan. Through her work she recognized the global tragedy of maternal mortality, and while living in Uganda between 2005 and 2017, she founded the non-profit Save the Mothers, to help address the many causes of maternal mortality.
Dr. Chamberlain continues to regularly travel to Uganda and delivers training to local health providers in helping to prevent maternal mortality.

Dr. Laurie Elit is a surgeon specialized in gynecological cancer, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and cross-appointed in the Department of Oncology. She is a member of the humanitarian health ethics (hhe) research group, a collaboration between researchers and clinicians that addresses unique ethical issues faced in the humanitarian context. Joining MacGLOBAS’s leadership, Laurie will be able to share her experience as an gynecologic cancer surgeon and researcher in LMICs, and her work with the hhe research group.

Dr. Joel Hamstra is an Anesthesiologist at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton and assistant clinical professor in the Department of Anesthesia at McMaster. Dr. Hamstra joins MacGLOBAS having worked in Guyana with the Canadian Anesthesia Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF), in the development and implementation of Guyana’s first Anesthesia Residency program.

Dr. Carolyn Levis is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at McMaster University. Carolyn has worked in Guatemala and Ukraine, Haiti, Honduras and Ecuador performing hand and microsurgery for populations without access. She received the Ukraine Order of Merit for her work providing surgery to injured Ukrainian soldiers in 2015. Joining MacGLOBAS in 2018 as a member of the Executive Committee and took over as Director of MacGlObAS from Dr. Cameron in 2021. Carolyn’s experience in initiatives with physical therapy will help MacGLOBAS in developing collaborative interdisciplinary projects with the different surgical specialists and allied health disciplines.

Dr. Caitlin VanDeCappelle

Dr. Caitlin VanDeCappelle is an Anesthesiologist at Hamilton Health Sciences and assistant clinical professor in the Department of Anesthesia at McMaster University. She joins MacGLOBAS as a member of the Post Graduate Medical Education Global Health committee, which works to establish pre-elective training, post-elective debrief and a comprehensive global health curriculum for McMaster trainees. She is also an active collaborator with the UBC Global Surgery Lab (https://globalsurgery.med.ubc.ca/global-surgery-lab/) an interdisciplinary group that aims to improve knowledge of and access to surgical care in underserved communities through innovative educational platforms and research projects.
