MacGlObAS Global Surgical Scholar Program
As part of MacGlObAS’ mandate to support the development of global surgical scholars and production of innovative interdisciplinary research in global surgery, MacGlObAS will be supporting two types of bursaries for residents, fellows, and faculty to pursue work in Academic Global Surgery.
Awards:
Research Bursary
MacGlObAS will award up to three research bursaries of up to $3,000 each, to residents and clinical fellows from McMaster University’s departments of Anesthesia, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Surgery. Bursary applicants require at least one sponsoring faculty member from one of the three clinical departments or Global Health Office and must include a partnership with a Global South member. Bursary cannot be used as salary replacement or payment of investigator(s) or faculty, but may be used for payment of personnel helping to coordinator or collect data. All applicable McMaster policies must be followed in use/disbursement of funds.
- Eligibility: Applicant must be current resident or fellow from the three clinical departments, have a sponsoring faculty from McMaster University, and have an identified Global South co-investigator.
- Criteria: Purpose and objectives relate to Global Surgery, evidence of local (Global South) partnership and engagement, quality of proposal and strategies for knowledge translation (application of research findings to improve global surgical care or education).
Publication Bursary
MacGlObAS will award up to three research publication bursaries of up to $1,000 each, to residents, faculty, and clinical fellows from McMaster University’s departments of Anesthesia, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Surgery. Bursary applicants require co-authorship with a Global South partner. Bursary funds are to be used to offset the fee for publishing to an open-access research journal or cost of presenting research at a national or international conference.
- Eligibility: Faculty, resident, or clinical fellow from one of the three clinical departments at McMaster University, identified Global South co-investigator/co-author, research involving human or animal subjects must have received both McMaster University and local ethics approval prior to commencing.
- Criteria: Quality of journal or conference (is it recognized peer-reviewed journal, relevant to Global Health or Global Surgery, open access?), evidence of Global South partner involvement in research and recognition in authorship/participation.
